Niger
The UN Humanitarian Co-ordinator in Bosso, in southeastern Niger, Fode Ndiaye, has called for international mobilisation to remedy the humanitarian crisis in the region, as the population flee following violent attacks from Boko Haram .
26 Nigerien soldiers were killed on June 3, following an attack by Boko Haram militants.
Authorities say 55 insurgents were killed during the battle with many others seriously wounded.
More than 50,000 people have deserted the region located near the border between Nigeria and Chad.
“Thousands of people are leaving in extremely difficult conditions, without water or shelter. Some are spread under the trees with this overpowering heat in this month of Ramadan,” Ndiaye said.
UN officials in Niger say the budget allocated for humanitarian response remains inadequate in the face of the crisis.
There are fears that inadequate water supply will accelerate community conflicts if nothing no urgent action is taken.
